Opening the till, cash in and out, and the Z report

Every till session starts with a float and ends with a count. Everything taken in between — by every payment method — is added up for you, so cashing up is a count and a comparison, not a calculation.

  1. 1

Start the session with a float

First thing, open Cash Up and enter the Opening float. That starts a session for this till; every sale, refund and cash movement until you close it belongs to that session.

  2. 2

Record cash going in or out

Van fuel, a bank run, petty cash — under Cash in / out pick the direction, enter the amount and a reason, and press Record. It is listed with the time and who did it, and the expected drawer figure adjusts.

  3. 3

Check mid-day with an X report

Print X report prints the takings so far without closing anything: taken, refunded and net by payment method, plus the cash movements. Useful at a shift change.

  4. 4

    Count the drawer

At the end of the day the Drawer panel shows the opening float, cash taken, cash refunded and the Expected in drawer figure. Count the cash and type it into Counted cash. The variance is worked out for you; add a note if there is something worth recording.

  5. 5

    Close with the Z report

Closing the session prints the Z report — payments taken, cash movements, expected against counted — with a Z reference and the name of whoever closed it. Recent Z reports stay listed on the page and can be reprinted any time, and each one is also available under Reports as the End of day report.

Questions merchants ask

Do refunds come off the takings?

Yes. Takings this session shows taken, refunded and net for each payment method, and cash refunds reduce the expected drawer figure.

We have two tills. Do they cash up separately?

Yes. Each till keeps its own session, float and Z report. Pick the till in the top bar before you start the session.

What if I forget to close the session?

Sales keep going onto the open session. Close it when you next cash up; the report covers everything since the float was entered.
