Margins, repricing, price bands and contract prices

Every selling price in PlanIt EPOS comes from a cost and a margin, so a cost change never quietly eats your profit. This guide covers the four places a price can be decided, in the order the till checks them.

  1. 1

Set the default Retail and Trade margins

Under Settings → Retail & trade pricing enter a Trade margin and a Retail margin as a percentage on cost. That is what the till’s Retail / Trade switch does: a cash sale starts on Retail, picking a trade account switches to Trade. Any product with no price of its own is priced from these.

  2. 2

    Set margins per supplier

On Buying / Suppliers each supplier shows the average retail and trade margin you make on them. Set margins enters a retail and trade margin for that supplier and reprices everything they supply. Leave a box blank to leave that price as it is.

  3. 3

Reprice a category or a supplier with a preview

Pricing → Repricing applies to every active product, one category or one supplier. Pick the method — target margin on selling price, mark-up on cost, or move current prices by a percentage — and the rounding, then press Preview. The table shows cost, price now, new price and margin before and after for every product. Nothing changes until you apply.

    • Products with no cost recorded are skipped by the margin methods; give them a cost first.
  4. 4

Create price bands for groups of accounts

Pricing → Price bands: add a band with a code and a name, then rules — everything in the band or one product; a percentage off list, a percentage margin on cost, or a fixed price; optionally only from a minimum quantity. Put the band on the account under Customers, and it applies whenever they are picked on the till.

  5. 5

Agree a contract price for one customer

Pricing → Contract prices: pick the account customer, the product and the agreed price. A contract price beats the band, the trade margin and the list price, every time.

Which price wins

  1. A contract price for this customer on this product.
  2. The customer’s price band rules.
  3. The product’s own Trade or Retail price, set on the product or by repricing.
  4. The Settings trade or retail margin on the product’s cost.

Margins throughout are mark-up on cost unless a screen says otherwise; the Repricing screen offers margin of selling price as well. The Product database shows cost, trade and retail with the margin for each, and lets you edit them inline.
